Intraoperative aberrometry with ORA
ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) is an intraoperative measurement technology that can provide additional information during cataract surgery.
ORA may be used to help refine or confirm IOL power and, in appropriate cases, assist with lens positioning.
This can be especially useful in situations where achieving a precise refractive outcome is important, including certain patients receiving toric or premium IOLs and patients with a history of previous refractive surgery.
ORA is an additional technology—not a substitute for careful preoperative planning and surgical judgment.
Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery
Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery uses a laser to perform certain preliminary steps of cataract surgery.
The laser can assist with:
- Creating the corneal incision
- Creating the opening in the anterior capsule
- Fragmenting the cataract
The surgeon then completes the procedure by removing the cataract and implanting the IOL.
Is laser cataract surgery better?
Not necessarily for every patient.
Both conventional phacoemulsification and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery are established techniques.
The laser can provide precise, computer-controlled creation of certain surgical steps, but the decision to use it should be based on the individual patient’s anatomy, surgical plan, and goals.
Technology is most valuable when it provides a meaningful benefit for the patient.
Astigmatism correction
Astigmatism can prevent a patient from achieving the clearest possible vision after cataract surgery if it is not addressed.
Depending on the amount and type of astigmatism, treatment options may include:
- Toric IOLs
- Astigmatic corneal incisions
- Laser vision correction in selected situations
- Other individualized approaches
Accurate corneal measurements are essential for planning astigmatism correction.
Advanced IOL planning
The IOL is the optical system that remains in your eye after the cataract is removed.
That makes lens selection an important part of surgical planning.
